English majors can learn about career options from prominent Virginia Tech alumni at the eighth annual English Career Connections on Friday, Nov. 6, in Owens Hall.

Members of the English Department’s Distinguished Alumni Board will share their knowledge and experience, conduct practice interviews, review resumés, and lead information sessions.

The event, from noon to 6 p.m., is free, but space is limited. Program details and registration information are on the event’s website.

Students will meet with successful professionals in fields including broadcasting, writing, advertising, finance, law, literature and language, teaching, technology, and nonprofit leadership.

“This is a rare opportunity for students to hear how a background in English leads to career success in a vast array of fields,” said Mary Denson Moore, senior instructor in the English Department and its alumni relations coordinator. “They will also learn how to find internships and apply to graduate school. Our Virginia Tech English alumni prove over and over again that you can start here and go anywhere.”

Keynote speaker for the event will be Lisa Derx, vice president for government relations at Best Buddies International and a founding member of the alumni board. Her speech is titled "Creating a curlique career: How English majors flourish in the work world."

Information session topics will be:

  • Careers in Literature and Language: Pre-law, literature, and linguistics.
  • Professional and technical writing.
  • Looking toward graduate school.
  • Internships.
  • Careers in creative writing.
  • Careers in education.
