G. Geoffrey Vining wins prestigious Box Medal
G. Geoffrey Vining, professor of statistics in Virginia Tech’s College of Science, will receive the Box Medal by the European Network of Industrial and Business Statistics in September at this year’s annual congress in Prague, Czech Republic.
The annual award is named after George Box, professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin, and recognizes an extraordinary statistician who has made remarkable contributions to the development and application of statistical methods in business and industry. Past recipients include Virginia Tech's Bill Woodall, professor of statistics in the College of Science, as well as other international statisticians such as Gerry Hahn, Poul Thyregod, David Cox, and Box himself.
Vining’s research areas include experimental design and analysis for quality improvement, response surface methodology, and statistical process control.
He has won numerous professional awards, authored and co-authored several books, and has been editor of the Journal of Quality Technology. In 2010, he received the Shewhart Medal from American Society for Quality (ASQ), which recognizes outstanding technical leadership in modern quality control and in 1990, received the Brumbaugh Award for the most influential paper published in an ASQ journal.
Vining received his bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee and his master's degree and Ph.D. from Virginia Tech. He returned to Virginia Tech in 1999 to become head of the Department of Statistics.
