Susan G. Magliaro named to state education panel
Susan G. Magliaro, professor and director of Virginia Tech's Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education program, has been appointed to Virginia’s Standards of Learning Innovation Committee, as announced by Gov. Terry McAuliffe.
The committee, which includes six Virginia General Assembly members as well as public school and university officials from across the commonwealth, is charged with recommending ways to further reform standards of learning (SOL) assessments and student growth measures, and to encourage innovative teaching in the classroom.
A professor of educational psychology in the School of Education, Magliaro works with the Virginia Initiative for Science Teaching and Achievement which brings two dozen local elementary teachers to campus each summer for a four-week professional development institute. VT-STEM builds networks within the university and across K-12 communities to enhance the effectiveness of education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Members of the SOL innovation panel were chosen by Virginia Secretary of Education Anne Holton, who said its members have an opportunity to shape the next generation of Virginia’s Standards of Learning.
“I am confident that the committee will develop both short-term and long-term recommendations to better align our education system with the needs of the 21st century economy,” Holton said.
Magliaro received her bachelor's degree from East Stroudburg University, a master's degree from Iowa State University, and an Ed.D. from Virginia Tech.
