Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets alumnus named Pittsburgh game Hokie Hero
Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets alumnus 1st Lt. Ryan Murphy, U.S. Army who earned a degree in international studies and a minor in French from the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences as well as a minor in leadership studies from the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Rice Center for Leader Development in 2010 has been selected as the Hokie Hero for the Pittsburgh game.
The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Hokie Hero program started in 2006 by IMG College and sponsored by the University Bookstore, honors Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets alumni who are currently deployed. Recipients of this honor are highlighted by Bill Roth and Mike Burnop during the radio broadcast of Virginia Tech football games, on the Corps of Cadets website and in the Corps Review magazine.
Murphy is currently stationed at Forward Operating Base Shank, Afghanistan, as an Executive Officer in the 703rd Brigade Support Battalion, Task Force Vanguard. He is from Fair Haven, N.J., and this is his first combat deployment.
Murphy is a Class of 2010 graduate of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets where he served as the executive officer of Golf Company and the regimental operations officer during his senior year. He also served as the Ranger Company Executive Officer in Army ROTC.
Murphy says he would like to send his love to his family and friends, especially to his fellow Hokies currently deployed all over the world.
