Norris Hall Task Force to consider two proposals; final recommendation expected by Dec. 7
The Norris Hall Task Force met today to hear team presentations on two proposals for the future use of 4,500 square feet in Norris Hall.
The two final proposals are:
- Proposal for the Institute for Transformative Learning, and its two centers, the Center for Violence Prevention and Peace Studies and the Center for Student Engagement and Community Partnerships.
- Proposal for Re-Creating a Student-Centered Community, submitted by the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics in the College of Engineering.
The task force plans to submit its final recommendation to Virginia Tech President Charles Steger by Dec. 7.
The task force will consider both proposals with regard to several elements, such as fit with the university’s mission and strategic plan, programmatic impact, and cost.
In August, Steger asked University Provost Mark McNamee to chair an ad hoc task force and to invite and develop recommendations for the future use of the Norris Hall space by the end of the fall semester.
In October, the Norris Hall Task Force received seven pre-proposals for the space under review, and identified three pre-proposals as most promising for further development. From these, the two proposals identified above have emerged.
“The task force is faced with a difficult charge and are deeply committed to thinking through the many opportunities and challenges that the utilization of this space presents,” said McNamee. “It will carefully consider all feedback.”
