Geography professor Jim Campbell receives 2007 Undergraduate Alumni Advising Award

Jim Campbell of Blacksburg, professor of geography in the College of Natural Resources at Virginia Tech, received the university's Undergraduate Alumni Advising Award for his excellence as an undergraduate advisor.

The award is given to recognize an individual who serves undergraduates in exemplary ways.

When commenting on his experience as an advisor, Campbell said, “This has provided me a perspective on the trajectory of students during their time at the university, as they gain experience and develop focused interests that develop career choices. After a while, that kind of understanding improves the way that a faculty member organizes his or her courses and presents material in the classroom.”

Campbell has been a professor at Virginia Tech since he received his Ph.D. in 1976 from the University of Kansas. He received his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College.

The College of Natural Resources at Virginia Tech consistently ranks among the top five programs of its kind in the nation. Faculty members stress both the technical and human elements of natural resources and instill in students a sense of stewardship and land-use ethics. Areas of studies include environmental resource management, fisheries and wildlife sciences, forestry, geospatial and environmental analysis, natural resource recreation, urban forestry, wood science and forest products, geography, and international development.
