Congressman Jim Moran to speak at 2007 National Capital Region commencement
Congressman Jim Moran, Eighth Congressional District representative of Virginia, will address the 2007 graduates of the Virginia Tech National Capital Region during the university’s commencement ceremony at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, May 13, at the Center for the Arts located at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.
Approximately 370 National Capital Region students are expected to complete their degree requirements and participate in commencement ceremonies.
Moran, who is currently serving his ninth term in the U.S. House of Representatives, was first elected to city council in Alexandria in 1979. In 1982 he was elected Vice Mayor of Alexandria, followed by Mayor 1985.
Throughout his political career, Moran has demonstrated leadership in support of regional transportation solutions, the environment, women's issues, technology, fair and open trade, and fiscal discipline. He is well known for his efforts to protect federal employees and military retirees. He co-chairs the Congressional Prevention Coalition Caucus and is active on human rights issues, particularly involving women in the developing world.
Moran is co-founder of the New Democrat Coalition, a group of approximately 75 centrist House Democrats committed to fiscal responsibility, free trade, technology, and maintaining America's security and economic competitiveness. Moran is also a member of the Appropriations Committee, where he serves on the Defense Subcommittee and Interior Subcommittee.
Moran received his bachelor’s degree from the College of Holy Cross and his master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public and International Affairs.
