University update on higher education, immigration matters

We understand and share many of the concerns expressed in a statement published by the American Association of Colleges and Universities, an organization which primarily represents private liberal arts colleges and universities. Virginia Tech has clearly articulated its position on the essential role of federally sponsored research in higher education, and our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and freedom of expression and inquiry. We are working closely with the Association of Public & Land Grant Universities and the American Council on Education which, along with the Association of American Universities, is pursuing legal action on multiple fronts.
As a public land grant university with an inclusive mission to engage all citizens of the commonwealth, our role is to facilitate constructive dialogue and understanding across differences. We are working with our leadership, professional associations, and elected and appointed representatives to find common ground and support for Virginia Tech’s continuing ability to engage in research, education, and outreach that strengthens and uplifts the communities we serve.
Earlier today, we learned that international students across the nation whose records had been terminated in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) are having those records restored. We have confirmed that record restoration is in process for Virginia Tech students and alumni participating in Optional Practical Training. We are pleased to have these students back on track earning their degrees, performing research, and assisting with our teaching and learning mission.
