Facilities housekeeper loves her "work family"
Having worked at Virginia Tech for seven years, Facilities Housekeeper Susan Hypes wishes she had come to the university long ago. She refers to the faculty and staff in the Student Services building as her "work family," and greets almost everyone by their name. "My mom always taught me that the best form of respect is when you greet someone, greet them by their name," said Hypes.
I believe in starting the day early, getting it done. I get up at 3:30 'cause I drink coffee and then kind of do a few things around my house before I leave, then my day starts at six o. I'm cleaning the bathrooms, desk mopping the halls, vacuuming, pulling trash, checking my stairways, pulling the outside trash, keeping my doors clean. I spend a lot of time on first floor keeping everything done up because I feel like that when somebody comes through my building, that's kind of my signature on the building. And I think first impressions mean a lot. So I do try to keep the fingerprints off the doors, and I find it funny that people will tell me, Well, they're just going to get back on there. And I just jokingly say that fingerprints are good, fingerprints are job security. I've worked retail almost all my working life. And one of my best friends works over here, and she told me about that job. And when I was working in retail, I also did a part time cleaner job. So that kind of helped me and get into it. Happy Friday Eve, y'all. I've always thought it was a beautiful campus, and I mostly knew about Frank Beamer and football and basketball. But prior to coming here, that's about all the knowledge that I had of Virginia Tech. I mean, I always knew that it was a prestigious university. It's really nice getting to see the students firsthand walking through campus, but more than anything. I see each department in student services building, they work so hard for the students. And, you know, I'm always telling them that they are hard workers, and I appreciate what they do. Okay. See ya later, y'all have a good day. I like to refer to mas work family. My mom always taught me that the best form of respect is when you greet someone, greet them by their name. Hey, Sarah. Doing good. You doing okay? So I try to learn as many names as I can. I try to treat them all like I want to be treated. And I just I love them. They tell me that I'm doing a good job, which means a lot to me. They may say I'm talkative, which I am. I think they respect me, but more than anything, anybody comes in my building. I want them to see trust that they trust me to know that this building is clean and disinfected to the best of my ability. This past March was my seventh year anniversary. I tell everybody and I mean this wholeheartedly that I wish I came here a long time ago.
