Each year, first-year cadets complete the 26-mile Caldwell March. The first half takes place in the fall semester, and departs from the Caldwell Homestead in Craig County. The second half takes place in the spring semester, starting where the first half ended. Cadets cross two mountains on their journey and the second half ends with first-year cadets and their training cadre arriving on Upper Quad. Completion of Caldwell March is a milestone for first-year cadets and marks the end of their first year of training.

Caldwell March is named after Addison Caldwell, Virginia Tech's first cadet and student. He walked around 26 miles to be the first to enroll at then Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College.
