The Fralin Biomedical Research Institute hosted 34 high school and undergraduate students in Roanoke this summer for a 10-week hands-on research experience. The cohort recently presented their research interests and discoveries at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute research symposium.
So this is a summer fellowship that we bring in undergraduates and high-school students to really expose them to what cutting-edge science is. We fill the lab with about 34 students this summer though for many of them, it's their first time getting to do hands-on research in an independent way and it's really transformative. I heard one of the surf fellows today describe it as the first time they were in an adult lab. And so it really, it really captured to me just what a transformative event this had been for that fellow. The fMRI symposium offers students an opportunity to present their work that they've worked on for the last two weeks, their research in their labs. It gives them an opportunity to present. It gives them an opportunity to collaborate with faculty and staff and present to an audience. We offer evaluation feedback, and at the end there are prizes. Are these programs provide amazing opportunities for students, both, again, high school students and undergraduates to get hands-on experience in our labs to work with world-class researchers and alongside world-class researchers. So it's a really great, well-rounded experience.
