College of Science 2020 Outstanding Senior Amber Abbott
I grew up in Blacksburg so Virginia Tech was my first choice, I didn't really consider anywhere else seriously. It's a great school for science, I first was interested in biology during high school when I had an AP bio a class. I didn't really know what I wanted to do in that area I got really lucky because I joined a research lab and we were doing some really cool stuff related to it so that's why I've kept with it. Our lab looks at the mechanisms controlling herpes simplex virus latency and reactivation, so I've helped out with a few projects related to that, I have also worked on projects looking at the effects of HSV-1 infection on the accumulation of the Alzheimers proteins Amyloid Beta and p-Tau. So my favorite moment at Tech was when I went on a service trip during my sophomore year to New York City. I was with a group of students through VT Engage and we were volunteering at the Gay Men's Health Crisis center. So we were interacting with HIV/AIDS patients and I think that whole experience really opened my eyes to the actual effects of doing research and the more personal side of like what I would do with a bench you see that like doing research can actually impact people's lives so I think that maybe "favorite" isn't the best word but it was at least the most profound and impactful moment while I've been at Virginia Tech.
