Video duration: President Tim Sands discusses impact of Innovation Campus
Virginia Tech’s bold decision to create the Innovation Campus is keeping with its longstanding emphasis on promoting economic development across the commonwealth as part of its land-grant mission. President Tim Sands shares how the campus will be transformative for the Blacksburg campus as well.

[00:00:01] >> We've got sites all over the Commonwealth but there's so much activity in National Capital Region, we thought we needed to expand and we were planning an Innovation Campus. This opportunity that Amazon initiated became a catalyst for us continuing with our plans and it worked out beautifully. Although the cornerstone of our commitment to the Commonwealth is to double computer science related disciplines in Blacksburg, the impact of the tech talent pipeline initiative will be much broader than computer science alone. [00:00:33] It will impact liberal arts, it will impact science, it will impact business. So the undergraduate population in computer science and related disciplines will grow by about 2000 students. This means infrastructure, it means more faculty hires. We expect to hire about 130 new faculty who will support that growth over the next several years. [00:00:55] This tech talent pipeline serves not only Amazon and the jobs that it will bring but all of the related industries that will develop around that with a new Virginia economy that has a technology focus.
