Cloyd Fellow discovers a passion for elder rights advocacy
When Emily Hoyt, a human development major in the Virginia Tech College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, discovered an interest in gerontology, she organized
the first Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Wytheville, Virginia.

>> My name is Emily Hoyt and I am a senior human development major here at Virginia Tech and I am a Pamplin Scholar through the Honors College. And I am also a Cloyd Fellow. I had proposed to Dr. Pam Teaster, who does a lot of research in elder abuse, that we put together a World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Conference in southwest Virginia and include anyone who really had a stake in the well-being of older adults.

The goal of the day was to facilitate community conversation around elder abuse and elder justice. When I came to college, I was not sure really what I wanted to do at all and through this experience of planning a conference and through the Cloyd Fellowship, I was really able to hone in on that and realize that I have a passion for public health.

Not only a passion for public health, but a passion for public health through the gerontology order adult lens.
