Personal Electric Vehicles on Campus

From: University Operations

With thousands of faculty, staff, and students on campus each day, Virginia Tech encourages the use of alternative transportation options and is proud to be at the forefront of reducing our carbon footprint and embracing sustainable modes of transportation. The safe usage of these alternative transportation options is critical to maximizing their benefit to our campus community. With the increase in the use of electronic personal assistance mobility devices (EPAMDs) on campus, including electronic bicycles, scooters, and skateboards, it is important that they are operated in a safe manner and in accordance with university regulations.

University Policy 5005: Bicycle and Personal Transportation Devices, updated in 2016 to include EPAMDs, provides guidelines for the usage and storage of these devices. The policy outlines safe practices when choosing to use these devices on Virginia Tech’s campus and applies to Virginia Tech faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

Please note the following guidelines from Policy 5005:

  • All persons operating electric scooters, EPAMDs, and other personal transportation devices must follow all laws of vehicular traffic.
  • E-scooters and EPAMDs cannot block ADA pathways, ADA access ramps, or building entrances or exits.
  • E-Scooters and EPAMDs, including hover boards, and the chargers for these devices are not permitted, either for use or for storage/charging, in university facilities. They should not be brought inside university owned or leased facilities, including residence halls.
  • E-Scooters and EPAMDs cannot be charged at any exterior outlets at university facilities.

Please read Policy 5005: Bicycle and Personal Transportation Devices for all guidelines that apply to the operation of bicycle and personal transportation devices. Visit the FAQ for additional information.

We appreciate your support of these guidelines and your commitment to helping keep our campus safe for the Virginia Tech community.
