For a full list of events happening throughout the month, check our Earth Month website.
If you are an individual with a disability and desire an accommodation, please contact Emily Vollmer at (540) 231-1091 or vollmere@vt.edu during regular business hours at least 10 business days prior to the event.
Some of the activities occurring throughout Earth Month sponsored by the Division of Facilities include:
The Big Clean
- Monday, April 14, from 4-6 p.m.
- Various locations across campus and town
- Additional details
Each spring, volunteers come together to clean up litter and beautify the Blacksburg area. It’s a meaningful way for students, faculty, and community members to give back and show appreciation for the spaces we live and work in. By helping to clean and maintain public spaces, volunteers contribute to a cleaner, healthier Blacksburg for everyone. Join the Virginia Tech Office of Sustainability in making this event a success!
New River Environmental Coalition (NREC) Summit
- Tuesday, April 22, from 4-6 p.m.
- Blacksburg Library Community Room
- Additional details
The New River Environmental Coalition (NREC) is a group of students, staff, and community members interested in promoting sustainability through mutually beneficial partnerships to create a collective impact in the New River Valley. It’s all about sharing resources and information, collaborating, and building community. Anyone interested in improving sustainability (environmentally, economically, or socially), is welcome to be involved with NREC and to attend our meetings. Our Summit on April 22 is an opportunity for us to reflect on NREC's first year, celebrate our progress, and plan for the year ahead. The NREC Summit will include an overview of our work, brief presentations from campus and community members about project progress from this year, talks from keynote speakers, and breakout discussions to plan for the year ahead.

Participants will have an opportunity to celebrate Virginia Tech's urban forest by helping to plant a new tree on campus and engage with Virginia Tech's Field Arborist, Kenneth Harmon. Participants are asked to convene outside of the Human & Agricultural Biosciences Building, by the north entrance.
Sustainable Fashion Show
- Tuesday, April 29, from 7:30-9 p.m., doors open at 7 p.m.
- Burruss Hall auditorium
- Additional details
Virginia Tech’s first-ever sustainable fashion show was created two years ago by student interns at the Virginia Tech Office of Sustainability. Following the success of the past two years, the Office of Sustainability and the Sustainable Fashion Society at VT are excited to bring an even bigger and better show this year! Our fashion show differs from others here at Virginia Tech in that all of the materials and clothing utilized are sustainably sourced. We hope that this show can inspire college students to express themselves through fashion while also consuming sustainably and looking out for our planet.
