How to lease space for university departments

Virginia Tech departments wishing to lease space - including residential space not covered by the university travel policy - must obtain advance approval from senior leadership in accordance with the university space management policy. 

Upon approval to lease space, Real Estate Management will collaborate with the department to identify appropriate space and execute a lease and/or agreement on behalf of the university. Signature authority for leases is stated in the university contract signature policy. 

Partnering with Real Estate Management helps prevent individuals from being personally liable for leases and their obligations. 

Hokie Mart transactions using lease related account codes will route through Real Estate Management before payment approval to help prevent departments from entering into unauthorized leases.
