Base pay increase implemented for eligible staff

From: Human Resources

As announced on Oct. 9 and with the support of university leaders and Staff Senate, Virginia Tech applied a one-time base pay increase in the amount of $608 to approximately 800 full-time, benefits-eligible university and classified staff employees with an annual salary of up to $43,175.

The increase was effective Oct. 25, 2024. Impacted employees will see the increase in pay issued on Nov. 15, 2024. Employees had to have been hired by Oct. 10, 2024, to be eligible for the increase.

Employees receiving the increase were notified by their supervisors or their college or department HR representative, and will be able to use the additional income to help defray employment costs such as parking or childcare. Because the increase is being applied to base salaries, employees participating in pre-tax retirement benefits programs will be able to save more for their future.

This base pay increase replaces a previous program implemented in March 2019, which provided an annual one-time $500 taxable pay supplement paid in January to full-time, benefits-eligible university and classified staff employees with an annual salary of $35,500 or less. The last payment made under the supplement program was Jan. 2024, to approximately 150 eligible employees.

This change is part of Human Resources’ continuing work to provide a strong compensation and benefits package to staff and faculty in order to attract and retain the best and brightest employees.
