Base pay increase to be provided for some staff employees
Increase to be given to eligible staff making up to $43,175 per year
With the support of university leaders and Staff Senate, Virginia Tech will apply a base pay increase to annual salaries of certain staff employees.
The one-time base pay increase in the amount of $608 will be given to approximately 800 full-time, benefits-eligible university and classified staff employees with an annual salary of up to $43,175.
“This base pay increase is part of Virginia Tech’s ongoing efforts to be a destination for talent,” said Bryan Garey, vice president for human resources. “This change is part of our continuing work to provide a strong compensation and benefits package to our valuable staff and faculty. We strive to elevate the work experience and increase our competitiveness, which will help us attract and retain the best and brightest employees.”
“Staff compensation has been a focus for Staff Senate during my term, specifically listening to our constituents about inflation and higher costs of living,” said LaTawnya Burleson, president of Staff Senate, which represents and advocates for university and classified staff members in the university shared governance process. “While the $500 supplement implemented in March 2019, was well-intended, the number of eligible employees has dropped each year as other pay changes – such as minimum pay increases – took effect. This $608 base pay increase will positively impact a large number of Virginia Tech staff. We appreciate the university’s continued dedication to addressing staff concerns and we look forward to more collaboration in the future.”
Virginia Tech employs approximately 3,400 university and classified staff. The increase will be effective Oct. 25, 2024. Impacted employees will see the increase in pay issued on Nov. 15, 2024. Employees hired by Oct. 10, 2024, will be eligible for the increase.
Employees receiving the increase will be able to use the additional income to help defray employment costs such as parking or childcare. Because the increase is being applied to base salaries, employees participating in pre-tax retirement benefits programs will be able to save more for their future.
“Virginia Tech values the contributions of every employee,” said Amy Sebring, executive vice president and chief operating officer. “This pay increase is one of a number of steps the university has taken to address employee concerns about pay as well as create a culture of excellence throughout the organization. The university is committed to providing a great place to work for all employees.”
The base pay increase replaces a previous program implemented in March 2019, which provided an annual one-time $500 taxable pay supplement paid in January to full-time, benefits-eligible university and classified staff employees with an annual salary of $35,500 or less. The last payment made under the supplement program was Jan. 2024, to approximately 150 eligible employees.
