Get involved in sustainability at Virginia Tech
From: Division of Facilities
Want to get involved in sustainability at Virginia Tech? The Office of Sustainability has put together a list of big and small ways that you can make a difference in creating a more environmentally responsible campus.
Increase and enhance pollinator habitats across campus by serving on the committee or volunteering at plantings.
Interns work five to 10 hours per week with the Office of Sustainability to complete projects with lasting impacts on campus sustainability. Applications open in the spring semester. Please note, this is an unpaid internship that lasts the duration of the academic year.
Volunteer before and during every home football game to educate fans on proper recycling practices at Virginia Tech.
Green Office Certification and Green Lab Certification:
Green the spaces where you work! Serve as a trained representative for the office or lab that you work in and educate others on how to be more sustainable.
The Big Clean:
Volunteer to help clean up litter during this communitywide event held every spring.
Race to Zero Waste:
This nationwide competition between colleges and universities aims to reduce waste and improve sorting. Participate by learning how to sort your waste and educating others.
Climate Action, Sustainability, and Energy (CASE) Committee and Subcommittees:
The committee’s charge is to provide guidance to university administration on implementation of the university's Climate Action Commitment and opportunities to enhance Virginia Tech's pursuit of environmental quality and social sustainability. The committee makes recommendations regarding the application of policies; infrastructural and operational changes; educational strategies and modifications; and other steps intended to foster broad engagement with the university's environmental goals. The committee oversees subcommittees that each carry out aspects of the committee's charge. Participate by attending committee meetings or serve on a subcommittee that aligns with your interests (subcommittees consist of staff, faculty, students, and community members).
Earth Week:
Attend, host, or volunteer at events during a weeklong celebration of campus sustainability progress in the spring.
Pledge to practice sustainability beyond graduation and earn a green cord to wear at commencement.
Develop an idea for a sustainable initiative you’d like to see implemented on campus and submit it for funding consideration. Proposals accepted during the fall semester.
Learn more and network with professionals during monthly presentations from guest speakers focused on a range of sustainability-related topics.
