The Materials Characterization Lab (MCL), a shared research facility operated by the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science and the Macromolecules Innovation Institute, is a centralized core facility equipped with a range of advanced instrumentation for materials characterization, as well as sample preparation and fabrication.

Located in 429 Kelly Hall at 325 Stanger St., Blacksburg, this resource is available to Virginia Tech research scholars (undergraduate and graduate students, post-doc, faculty, visiting scholars), who need the core lab’s resources for relevant research at no cost to the users.

For access to the MCL, please email Rituraj Borgohain (borgohain@vt.edu) with the following information:

  • Your name and PID.

  • Name of your research advisor or PI.

  • Department affiliation.

  • Program (Undergraduate/Graduate).

  • Expected graduation month/year.

  • A brief description of your research.

  • Recently, the MCL opened its doors to external industrial and academic clients under the university’s Technical Assistance Program (TAP), and Borgohain is currently working on external industrial projects as a primary investigator on research collaboration and funding opportunities. Please reach out to him for more information.

The lab is also creating research internship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students starting this summer. Contact Borgohain or Chenggang Tao (cgtao@vt.edu) for more information.
