Students: move files you want to keep out of your Google Shared Drives before June 3

Unclaimed Shared Drives became read-only Feb. 15; data from these will be deleted starting June 3

From: Division of Information Technology

As part of ongoing changes to Google services at Virginia Tech, Shared Drives managed solely by students will be discontinued.

Students may no longer create new Shared Drives in Google Workspace, and as of Feb. 15, 2024, existing student-managed Shared Drives became read-only.

Beginning June 3, 2024, existing student-managed Shared Drives will be deleted. Note: this date reflects an extension of this deadline. It is recommended that you download a copy of files you want to keep from your Shared Drives before this date.

You can find the list of Shared Drives you are a member of in your VT Google Drive app.

  • For files/folders you want to keep: download a copy from Shared Drives. This can be done at the file or folder level. You can then upload those files to your individual Google Workspace My Drive or store them elsewhere.
  • If you don’t need a copy of the files in a Shared Drive, do nothing. The drive will be deleted after June 3.

If you are a member of a Shared Drive that is actively being used by a university department (e.g., a Shared Drive for a research group, or one that you use(d) while working as a student employee or graduate assistant), reach out to your faculty advisor or supervisor to discuss how that Shared Drive will be managed, or whether you need to download any files within that drive.
