From hens to Hokies , videoStudents at Virginia Tech are gaining hands-on experience in poultry production through an egg enterprise. Students help care for the chickens, collect eggs, and learn how to process, grade, clean, and check eggs for quality. Along the way, they develop practical skills in animal care, flock management, and food production that can help prepare them for careers in animal science and related fields. The eggs produced through the program also make their way back into the Virginia Tech community. Dining Services incorporates the eggs into campus food service, while The Market of Virginia Tech, the university’s food pantry, provides eggs to students experiencing food insecurity. By connecting experiential learning with campus dining and food access, the egg enterprise gives students a firsthand look at the journey from farm to table while creating an opportunity for students to help fellow Hokies.
