From Peru to Zambia, new study abroad programs tempt students
Hike an Incan trail to Machu Picchu while learning about the business environment in Peru. Brush up on your Spanish language skills by living with a local family in Costa Rica. Visit Germany, Switzerland, and Italy to develop an understanding for engineering practices abroad.
Virginia Tech students can do all this and more, such as visiting classrooms in Zambia and interacting with students there, under new study abroad programs to be unveiled at the Global Education Fall Fair on the Drillfield.
On average, 1,000 students participate in an international program each year. This year's fair, Wednesday, Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., is designed to introduce even more students to the possibility of going abroad during their time at Virginia Tech.
“Some students visit our office with clear plans for where, when, and how they’ll go abroad. Other students, however, may not even realize that an international experience is possible for them,” said Bill Pruitt, assistant director for student services in the Global Education Office. “For those students, seeing the variety of programs available at our fair can be eye-opening.”
More than 80 programs will set up exhibits on the Drillfield including campus resources such as the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, Student Conduct, Career Services, and the Peace Corps.
“Having international experience under your belt is becoming increasingly important in the global marketplace, and students are recognizing this need,” Pruitt said.
