Matt Eick, professor of crop and soil environmental sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech, recently received the Award for Excellence in Career Advising from Career Services.

Eick, who came to Virginia Tech in 1997, said advising has been the most rewarding part of his job. He currently advises more than 100 students and his "open door policy" results in a steady stream of students going in and out of his office.

“Matt is such a good advisor that sometimes he advises students out of the department.” said Tom Thompson, professor and head of the Department of Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences. "He always puts the need of the student first and helps them realize whether environmental sciences is right for them or not."

Established in 1989, the Award for Excellence in Career Advising recognizes the value of career advising at Virginia Tech.

“We feel it is important to identify exemplary work of those who are assist students when they are making major decisions about their coursework and developing career plans," said said Donna Ratcliffe, director of career services.

Eick received his bachelor's degree from Virginia Tech and a master's degree and doctoral degree from the University of Delaware.
