Virginia Tech was among the top performers in the Governor's Preparedness Certification Program which recognizes state agencies that represent exemplary preparedness initiatives among government organizations.

Virginia Tech scored 92 percent for 2012 and recently received a certificate of recognition for its efforts.

“Because of Virginia Tech’s history, we have become a leader in campus preparedness," said Sherwood Wilson, Virginia Tech's vice president for administration. "Our Office of Emergency Management works tirelessly to stay in the forefront of emergency preparedness and management. It is gratifying to see this effort acknowledged."

Each year, the Office of the Secretary of Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security administers the annual Institutions of Higher Education Preparedness Assessment (IHEPA) to all public colleges and universities. The Governor's Preparedness Certification Program recognizes those state agencies with IHEPA scores of 90 percent or higher.

“Preparedness is truly a community effort," said  Michael J. Mulhare, director of emergency management. "This recognition reflects the effort and commitment of the Virginia Tech community to continually improve our resiliency.”

The IHEPA allows state government to gauge the overall level of preparedness among state colleges and universities, including such factors as physical security, continuity of operations planning, information technology security, document protection, human resources preparedness, training, and emergency preparedness.
