Virginia Tech to host multicultural Latin American music symposium Feb. 22 to 23
Virginia Tech’s Department of Music will host the First International Symposium on Latin American Music Feb. 22 to 23 in Squires Student Center on the Blacksburg campus.
The two-day event, Transcending Borders: Latin American Music and its Projection onto the World Stage, will feature presentations on Latin American music as it relates to politics, culture, and history. There will also be a forum with ethnomusicologist and keynote speaker Geoffrey Baker from Royal Holloway, University of London, and musical performances by Jorge Oviedo’s Ensamble Quito 6 and Virginia Tech faculty and students.
Symposium events are open to the public unless otherwise noted, although registration is required. Tickets for the Ensamble Quito 6 performance are $12 and can be purchased through the Squires Student Center Box Office.
The symposium is sponsored by the Department of Music with support from Virginia Tech’s College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences Diversity Funding Award and a School of Performing Arts and Cinema Bruce Carver Multicultural Arts Grant.
“Our attendees will hear a lot of outstanding performances of Latin American music as well as some very interesting presentations about the music from that region,” said event organizer John Walker, an instructor in the Department of Music. “We are particularly excited that our faculty instrumentalists and our student vocalists will be performing and especially by the international nature of our featured performances and presentations.”
