Cook Counseling Center expands services, adds new positions
Virginia Tech’s Cook Counseling Center has created several new positions to accommodate the expansion of the university’s counseling program and provide better services to students.
Board-certified Psychiatrist Dr. James Reinhard, who served as commissioner of the Virginia Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Substance Abuse Services under governors Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, has been named associate director of psychiatry.
Reinhard received his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine and has received training at both Harvard and Dartmouth medical schools. He has additional board certification in forensic psychiatry, is a distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and has been a member of the executive board of the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors. Reinhard also currently serves as an associate professor of clinical psychiatry at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Charles Anderson has been appointed to a new associate director position.
Anderson, a licensed clinical psychologist, received his Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2003 and completed post-doctoral training at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and at the Virginia Institute for Psychiatric and Behavioral Genetics. He has experience with psychodynamic psychotherapy, forensic risk assessment, and intervention with high-risk populations, as well as both clinical and research specialization in working with eating disorder issues. He is currently working toward American Board of Professional Psychology certification in group therapy.
Assistant Director for Training Cathye Griffin Betzel is a licensed clinical psychologist with an interest in psychological assessment, women’s issues, and couples therapy.
She received her Psy.D. from the Georgia School of Professional Psychology. Her role involves coordinating the center’s pre-doctoral psychology internships and post-doctoral and practicum programs. Betzel is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Virginia Psychological Association, the Virginia Academy of Clinical Psychologists, and the Southeastern Psychological Association.
Assistant Director Ellie Sturgis is a licensed clinical psychologist and completed her Ph.D. at the University of Georgia. Her professional interests include anxiety, mood, eating, and substance abuse issues; attention deficit and learning difficulties; and relationships issues, particularly those of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered students. In addition to her background as a therapist, Sturgis spent many years as a faculty member at several other universities and medical schools.
