Student Government Association's 'VP Is In' forum returns for fall 2011
Virginia Tech students will once again have the opportunity to directly address issues with a university administrator when the Student Government Association’s VP Is In program returns this fall.
Sessions will be held Thursday, Sept. 22, in the Student Government Association office in Squires Student Center; Tuesday, Oct. 18, in Room C of the Graduate Life Center; and Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Deet’s Place. All sessions are 3:30 to 5 p.m.
The open forum allows students to interact with Vice President for Student Affairs Edward Spencer in a neutral environment and discuss any concerns or questions they may have about the university.
“It’s a wonderful time for me to keep in touch with the pulse of the student body and campus climate issues, and hopefully it is a time for students to connect with me as well as the administration in addition to getting their questions and suggestions addressed,” Spencer said.
Student Government Association President Corbin DiMeglio of Dumfries, Va., a senior majoring in finance in the Pamplin College of Business, believes the VP Is In is a great resource for students.
"The VP Is In is a rare opportunity for students to interact directly with the administration,” DiMeglio said. “It is extremely informative and the Student Government Association is grateful that our administration values the opinions of students so much that they continue to reach out for their concerns.”
Students discussed several topics with Spencer at the last VP Is In forum in March including the Went End Market renovation project, a possible revamp of the student government election process, runway expansion at Virginia Tech Montgomery Executive Airport, seating at Cassell Coliseum, and the project at the back of the War Memorial Gym. Other areas of interest were the university’s zero-tolerance drug policy and the possibility of instituting a “Good Samaritan” policy for when reporting a drug- or alcohol-related emergency means self-incrimination. Both issues were addressed in this year’s Hokie Handbook revisions.

The Division of Student Affairs at Virginia Tech encompasses departments dedicated to providing a rich co-curricular experience and essential student services. Virtually every aspect of a student's life outside the classroom is represented through the division's departments.
