Virginia Tech’s Division of Student Affairs, in conjunction with the Association of College Unions International, will host the national 2011 Collegiate 9-Ball Championships Friday, July 15 and Saturday, July 16 in Squires Student Center on Virginia Tech's main campus in Blacksburg.

The invitation-only tournament includes the top male and female billiards players from each ACUI regional tournament. It carries a top prize of $1,000. The tournament format is double-elimination, race to seven for women and race to eight for men, alternate break. About 70 players from colleges and universities throughout the United States will take part.

All tournament practice and competition will take place in the BreakZONE Recreation Center on the first floor of Squires.

“We are especially pleased to host this event at Virginia Tech,” said Chris Lisanti, recreation services coordinator for the BreakZONE. “It underscores that we have one of the best collegiate facilities for bowling and billiards in the nation.”

In addition to 16 9-foot Brunswick Gold Crown billiards tables and one 9-foot Pro-AM Diamond table, the BreakZONE includes bowling lanes, table tennis, foosball, shuffleboard, video games, a pro shop, and a snack bar. The EndZONE Lounge was added this spring. Students, faculty, staff, and community guests use the facility to test their skills while relaxing with friends in an alcohol-free, club-like atmosphere. The BreakZONE sponsors competitive leagues, on-site skills classes, and open play in a variety of activities throughout the academic year.
