Franklin Simmons Zhang, a sophomore majoring in general engineering in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, died unexpectedly on Saturday, March 29. He was 19 years old. 

Zhang, who came to Virginia Tech from Toronto, Canada, was an active member of the Securitas living-learning community and had recently joined the Honors College this semester.

He participated in clubs and organizations including the Cybersecurity Club, InspireFly, Kappa Theta Pi, and the Japanese Media Club. He showcased his talents and dedication by competing in capture the flag competitions in Lexington and Newport News earlier this year. Zhang also completed the program for a satellite project with the InspireFly club, which is set to launch in the coming months. 

“We are deeply saddened by Franklin’s passing and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew him,” said Julie Ross, the Paul and Dorothea Torgersen Dean of Engineering.  

The Zhang family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff, faculty, students, and the entire Virginia Tech community for welcoming Franklin into the Hokie family. They appreciate the opportunity he had to learn and grow through numerous experiences, and they are deeply thankful for everyone's support and assistance in making his time at Virginia Tech memorable and enriching.
