Dustin Read appointed Bates Family Professorship in Real Estate

Dustin Read, head of the Blackwood Department of Real Estate in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, has been appointed to the Bates Family Professorship in Real Estate.
The Bates Family Professorship in Real Estate was established in 1984 to support real estate education at Virginia Tech.
Read’s academic career began at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he served as the founding director of the Master of Science in Real Estate program. He joined Virginia Tech as an assistant professor of property management in 2014 and was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2018. In 2021, Read left Virginia Tech to serve as professor and director of the Master of Real Estate Development Program at Clemson University. In 2024, Read returned to Virginia Tech to assume his current position.
Read's research primarily focuses on housing affordability, property and asset management and the organizational behaviors of entities involved in various types of real estate development. His work has had a substantial impact, both academically and within the industry. He has maintained a steady and consistent level of productivity, publishing more than 40 articles in referred scholarly journals. His work appears in elite journals such as the Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics and Journal of Real Estate Research.
Additionally, Read has contributed to several other referred journals, industry-sponsored reports, and trade journal publications, further demonstrating his broad impact on both academic and professional communities.
Read received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Truman State University, a master’s degree in real estate from the University of Florida, a Juris Doctor from the University of Missouri, and a Ph.D. in public policy from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
