Paul M. Herr, professor of marketing in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of professor emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emeritus title may be conferred on retired faculty members who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.

Herr joined Virginia Tech in 2009. He served as head of the Department of Marketing from 2013-19. A member of the Virginia Tech community for more than 16 years, Herr made significant contributions through his work in teaching and research focusing on consumer-decision making, memory and judgment, and attitude theory surrounding brand strategies.

His scholarship was published in numerous peer-reviewed academic journals in marketing and psychology. In addition, Herr co-authored four books, co-edited the "Journal of Consumer Psychology," wrote multiple book chapters, and presented frequently at international academic conferences.

Herr supported the university, college, and department with his service learning experiences in developing courses, major concentrations, and minors for undergraduate and graduate students. In the classroom, Herr taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate marketing courses and served on dissertation committees of many doctoral students in the Department of Marketing. Throughout his career, he served as a popular director, mentor, and advisor for undergraduate and graduate students, helping them develop successful careers in both academia and industry.

Herr received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Oberlin College and a Ph.D. in social psychology from Indiana University.
