Annette Parker Burr ’68, associate professor emerita at Virginia Tech, passed away in Blacksburg on Jan. 2. She was 88.

She served as the art and architecture librarian at Virginia Tech, retiring in 2001, and on the Board of Advisors for the International Archive of Women in Architecture. She also taught classes in art history. 

A lifelong learner and social activist, she championed justice and equality, including teaching English as a second language. She generously shared her passions for books, art, travel, the outdoors, and animals with friends worldwide.

Upon retirement, Burr and husband, David Burr, Virginia Tech professor emeritus in history, took many trips pursuing their love of outdoor adventure through canoeing and kayaking. Annette Burr was an active member of the Rock Steady Boxing program for people with Parkinson’s disease at Warm Hearth Village, where she lived during her last decade.

Burr earned a bachelor's degree in English from Virginia Tech in 1968, a master's degree in library science from the University of North Carolina, and a master's and Ph.D. in art and art history from the University of Virginia.
