Looking ahead in 2025
It's a new year, Hokies. Here are some events and highlights to note for the year ahead.
As we begin the new year, here are 25 things to watch for in 2025.
- The Virginia Tech Hokies will play in the Duke's Mayo Bowl on Jan. 3 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
- The Virginia Tech Men's Club Ice Hockey team will play outdoors for the first time in program history on Jan. 4 at 7 p.m., against the North Carolina Tar Heels at Truist Field in Charlotte.
- The Office for Inclusion and Diversity and Student Affairs will host a series of events to mark the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, Jan. 20-25.
- Spring semester classes start Jan. 21. Classes will end May 7 with final exams beginning on May 9.
- President Tim Sands will deliver his annual State of the University address on Feb. 5.
- Virginia Tech Giving Day will start on Feb. 19 at noon.
- Virginia Tech graduate students in a variety of programs will have one thing in common come January: a new home at the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus Academic Building One in Alexandria.
- Staying in Alexandria, the 11-story, 300,000-square-foot Academic Building One of the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus will hold its official grand opening ceremony on Friday, Feb. 28. Regina Dugan, a two-time Virginia Tech alumna, will delivery the keynote address.
- The Moss Arts Center announces its 2025-2026 season on May 1 with season subscriptions on sale on May 8. Filled with legendary performers, bold voices, and soul-stirring rhythms from around the world, Moss performance seasons include something for everyone.
- After decades of blasting "Enter Sandman" as the Hokies take to the field, track, water, or court, the band itself - Metallica - will perform at Lane Stadium in a can't-miss concert on May 7.
- Surf's up this summer in Virginia Beach as Atlantic Park, a long dreamed-of surf park designed by Hokie alumni, will open.
- David Wilson ’84 mechanical engineering alumnus and recently retired president of Toyota Racing Development, has been named the 2025 spring commencement speaker for the College of Engineering ceremonies and will also serve as the Distinguished Lecturer for the Student Engineers’ Council during Engineer’s Week.
- Pack your curiosity and join fellow Hokies at the Study Abroad Fair in September. Head to the big white tents on the Drillfield, where students can discover life-changing international adventures that combine cultural immersion, hands-on learning, and unforgettable global experiences.
- U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. William H. Seely III will begin his role as the next commandant of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets upon his departure from active duty, which is planned for the spring of 2025. Retired U.S. Army Reserve Brig. Gen. Dwayne Edwards, head of Virginia Tech’s Department of Biological System Engineering, has served as interim commandant until Seely's arrival.
- The annual Docs for Morgan basketball fundraiser for the Morgan Dana Harrington Memorial Scholarship Fund at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine will be held on Feb. 5 in Roanoke.
- The Virginia Tech Honors College will participate in the Venice Architecture Biennial Exhibition “Time Space Existence” in 2025. The exhibition will run for six months from May to November, with a staggered opening between May 7-10.
- Carving Out Creativity, a multisensory art installation that connects Virginia Tech’s campuses and communities across the state, will launch in 2025.
- The Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC will host its Brain Awareness Week, a global campaign to raise public awareness about brain science and its benefits, from March 10-14.
- The College of Natural Resources and Environment will welcome a new dean in the fall. Paul Winistorfer announced his retirement after 16 years of leading the college.
- New pathways from the G. Burke Johnston Student Center to the Drillfield and by Whittemore and Cowgill halls will be completed, and work on a pathway between Patton and Holden halls will begin.
- Alumni Weekend is June 5-8 in Blacksburg. Registration is open.
- Spring commencement ceremonies will take place May 10-18. Fall commencement ceremonies will be held on Dec. 19.
- A memorial service to honor University Distinguished Professor Emerita Nikki Giovanni is planned for February. Details will be posted to this page as they become available.
- This year the College of Science is celebrating 14 Days of Pi from March 1-14. Since March 14 is on a Friday, participants will have two weekends and 14 days to complete their 3.14 miles and celebrate with the Hokie community.
- The Pamplin College of Business will host its annual Hokies on Wall Street event on April 24.
