Ronald R. Bos, professor emeritus at Virginia Tech, passed away in Blacksburg on Nov. 18.

While he taught kinesiology in the exercise science program, his major professional contribution was in administrative leadership, as the director of the Division of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. He served in that role for 17 years, until his retirement in 1996.

“Dr. Ron Bos was an excellent administrator and professor,” said Stella Volpe, professor and head of the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise. “I was fortunate that he was the director of the program when I was a Master of Science student in exercise physiology. I remember that Dr. Bos loaned his car to me and four other graduate students so we could attend the Southeast American College of Sports Medicine [SEACSM] conference. His strong involvement with SEACSM was influential in my continuing to attend both the regional and national ACSM [American College of Sports Medicine] meetings.”

In addition to his time with Virginia Tech, Bos was active in the conference, serving as its executive secretary from 1984-92. As executive secretary, Bos provided exceptional management support to nine successive executive committees.

“He was a dedicated professional leader, committed to providing high-quality education for students, and was exceptionally supportive of faculty development,” said William Herbert, Virginia Tech professor emeritus of human nutrition, foods, and exercise. “He was also my trusted colleague and friend.”

“Ron was always supportive and encouraged me to get involved with SEACSM,” said Janet Walberg-Rankin, professor emerita at Virginia Tech. “This organization became a special part of my professional development and connected me with some lifelong friends. I stayed in contact with Ron through both of our retirements and always enjoyed seeing him.”
