Corps of Cadets alumni Capts. Oliver McKellips, Tyler Remsen named Clemson game Hokie Heroes
U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Oliver McKellips, a 2020 corps graduate, earned his degree in national security and foreign affairs from the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Tyler Remsen earned his degree in finance from the Pamplin College of Business in 2017.
The Hokie Hero program honors corps alumni who are deployed. Recipients are highlighted by Bill Roth and Mike Burnop during their radio broadcast of Hokie football games, on the Corps of Cadets website, and in the Corps Review alumni magazine.
McKellips and Remsen are both deployed on USS Wasp in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. McKellips is with Battalion Landing Team 1/8, serving as the executive officer of a weapons company. Remsen is an MV-22 Osprey pilot with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 36.
While in the corps, McKellips was a member of Golf Company and served as the Skipper Crew gun captain. He also commanded the Naval ROTC battalion during the 2020 spring semester. Remsen was a member of India Company and Gregory Guard, the corps’ precision drill unit.
Also deployed on USS Wasp with McKellips and Remsen is U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Emily Bennick, a 2019 Virginia Tech alumna who earned her degree in wildlife conservation in the College of Natural Resources and Environment. Bennick is serving with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit Command Element as a public affairs officer. While at Virginia Tech, she was a member of the forestry club and the rowing team.
