Innovation Campus expands faculty with new computer science professor
Vaibhav Garg began his new role as collegiate assistant professor of computer science at the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus on August 10. His hiring brings the number of Innovation Campus faculty based in Alexandria to 18. Garg, whose academic appointment is based in Computer Science in the Virginia Tech College of Engineering, will teach Natural Language Processing and Social Media Analytics in the Master of Engineering program this fall.
Garg’s research is centered on applying computational methods to address societal challenges, including identifying inciting speech on social media and auditing rogue mobile apps for misuse. Among his interests are applied natural language processing (NLP), social media analytics, AI for social good, cybersecurity, and responsible computing. He has accepted papers in top-tier venues such as Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) and Communications of the ACM. He was most recently a teaching and coding instructor at the Outco Company in California.
“Dr. Garg’s research experience and interests are at the forefront of current trends in computer science,” said Lance Collins, vice president and executive director at the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus. “I am excited to see what strengths he brings to the university.”
Garg earned three degrees in computer science: a Ph.D. from North Carolina State University in Raleigh; a master’s from Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology in Delhi, India; and a bachelor’s from The LNM Institute of Information Technology in Jaipur, India.
Academic Building One, the Innovation Campus’ first academic building, is an 11-story, 300,000-square-foot structure, that will open to the public in January 2025. The 3.5-acre campus is located next to the Potomac Yard-VT Metrorail Station and close to the Ronald Reagan National Airport. At full buildout in 2028-29, the number of Innovation Campus faculty will be 50.
