Thomas K. Miller, professor of orthopaedic surgery in the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, has been conferred the title of professor emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emeritus title may be conferred on retired faculty members who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.

A member of the Virginia Tech community for more than 13 years, Miller made significant contributions to the university through his work in a wide variety of education, research, clinical care, and service endeavors, including serving as vice chair for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, section chief of sports medicine, medical student clerkship director, and director of graduate and undergraduate orthopaedic education.

His research productivity, accomplished while fully engaged in clinical practice and service to his patients, included more than 70 journal articles, text book chapters, and online publications; 90 scholarly presentations; and continuous grant funding since 2011.

Miller has advised more than 120 medical students, resident physicians, and health professions students whose research projects covered a wide spectrum of clinically focused topics.

Since moving to Roanoke in 1986, Miller has served the community as a physician, developing state-of-the-art clinical and ambulatory surgical care across the region. He has served his discipline of sports medicine through his involvement as medical advisor, board member or medical director in sports medicine-related organizations including the International Institute of Race Medicine, the Ironman Triathlon Advisory Board, the Ironman Global Medical Board, United States Olympic Committee, the Goodwill Games USA, the USA Rugby Football Union, the International Triathlon Union, the United States Medical Triathlon Association, the Class A affiliated baseball teams based in Salem, and the American Society for Sports Medicine.

Miller has been recognized with prestigious awards from a variety of state, national, and international organizations including the Virginia Orthopaedic Society, the Southeast Athletics Trainers Association, Becker’s Health Care, the National Athletic Trainers Association, the American Journal of Sports Medicine, and the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Miller received his bachelor's degree from Bethany College and his M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
