Summer camps in the College of Science at Virginia Tech are awesome.

This summer, middle, and high school students explored the world of science and got a sneak peek at college life through a series of action-packed summer camps at Virginia Tech.

“In our camps, campers actually DO science,” said Victoria Corbin, assistant dean of outreach and student engagement. “We have an incredible team of world-class professors and staff members who help campers to carry out experiments, get familiar with cutting-edge technology, and solve real-life problems.”

Explore Data Science

In the "Explore Data Science" camp, rising 11th-12th graders dove into the world of data science, learning to analyze data sets and tackle real-world problems. From designing experiments to considering the ethics of data collection, storage, and security, the campers geared up to make a difference.

Explore physical science

In the "Explore Physical Science" camp, 11th and 12th graders dipped their toes into experiential learning. Campers were introduced to fundamental concepts of physics and chemistry as well cutting-edge interdisciplinary fields like nanoscience and solar battery production. In one hands-on activity, they learned how to take various measurements on a waterway including width, depth, and velocity.

Explore Science

In the "Explore Science" camp, rising 9th-10th graders and rising 7th-8th graders explored crime scene analysis, neuroscience, physics, psychology, coding, game theory, and more.

Explore Life Science

In the "Explore Life Science" camp, rising 11th-12th graders investigated how life on Earth works from the molecular level to the ecosystem level. Campers isolated tiny viruses of bacteria from soil samples they brought from home, explored the ecology of plants around the Duck Pond, used biotechnology to solve a “crime”, and learned the science of fermentation while making pizza dough — and then ate said pizzas!
