A well-rounded education

The Phi Kappa Phi Medallion award recipient for the Bachelor of Science in Public Health Class of 2024, Kennedy distinguished herself not only through her outstanding academic achievements but also through her ability to integrate supporting the local community and an intense lacrosse sports team schedule.

Kennedy's journey to Virginia Tech began earlier than expected through her passion and skill for lacrosse. After committing to the university for athletics during her freshman year of high school, she quickly found a second home on campus. "As soon as I stepped onto campus, I absolutely loved it. I just felt so supported right away," Kennedy said.

Initially enrolling with a different major, Kennedy switched to public health halfway through her first year, a change sparked by the guidance of her academic advisor. This pivot came during the challenging times of COVID-19. "I knew I wanted to do something health-wise, and she put public health on my radar," Kennedy said of her advisor.

Kennedy's passion for public health is driven by her desire to prevent illness and promote health awareness. "I love learning about it, doing research, and then educating people on things," she said.

This enthusiasm has enriched her academic experience and led her to impactful research projects. Her practicum with the Virginia Department of Health focused on public health policies related to food insecurity, and she is currently interning with a nonprofit organization, creating content to mitigate adverse childhood experiences.

Balancing a demanding schedule as a lacrosse player with her studies, Kennedy has mastered the art of time management — a skill she believes has propelled her academic success. "I think honestly, with how crazy my schedule is, it kind of helped me out," she said, highlighting how sports have aided her in planning and prioritizing effectively.

Despite her busy life, Kennedy finds time to give back to the community, participating in youth coaching in sports, food drives, and events such as the Special Olympics, which connect her more deeply to the Blacksburg community. Her ability to integrate academic pursuits with community service embodies the Ut Prosim (That I May Serve) spirit of Virginia Tech.

The recognition with a Phi Kappa Phi Medallion came as a surprise to Kennedy. "I was so honored when I heard about it. I'm just grateful that my hard work has paid off," she said, reflecting the sentiment of her supportive family who were present at the award ceremony.

As she looks to the future, Kennedy remains open-minded about her career path, keen on exploring opportunities within health communication and prevention.
