Sara Leftwich has been promoted as division director of human resources for the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost management area after serving in an interim role since December 2022. She also will continue to have oversight of the university’s Dual Career Program.

With more than 25 years of experience in human resources and administrative leadership, Leftwich brings a wealth of knowledge from both the private sector and higher education. Her career with Virginia Tech began in 2006 as a senior recruiter in Advancement. Since 2012, Leftwich has led the university’s Dual Career Program, providing support to spouses and partners of newly hired faculty during their career transition to Roanoke and the New River Valley.

In addition, Leftwich has taken on interim human resources leadership roles with the Talent Acquisition team in the Division of Human Resources and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. Her commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive work environment is evident in her service on the Commission on Equal Opportunity and Diversity, Employee Benefits Committee, and Work-Life Liaisons.

“We are pleased to announce Sara’s promotion to this role,” said Bryan Garey, vice president for human resources. “Sara has helped many Hokies throughout her career at Virginia Tech. She will continue to do that through her great work with the Dual Career Program in addition to supporting the provost office team as division director with her wealth of experience and knowledge of human resources.”

In her new role, Leftwich will report to both Curtis Mabry, assistant vice president of consulting and strategic services in the Division of Human Resources, and Ron Fricker, vice provost for faculty affairs.

“I am absolutely delighted to work with Sara as division director of human resources for the provost’s office,” said Fricker. “Having had the pleasure of working closely with her for many years, I can personally attest to Sara’s exceptional skills, dedication, and positive energy.  Sara brings a collaborative spirit to everything she does that makes working together a truly enjoyable experience.”

Prior to joining Virginia Tech, Leftwich served as vice president of business development for Freedom First Federal Credit Union, staffing manager at BellSouth Communications Systems, and vice president loan administration for Member One Federal Credit Union. She received a bachelor’s degree in communication from Virginia Tech and a Master of Arts in liberal studies from Hollins University.
