Members of the media are invited to join and interview Black College Institute students and staff as they engage in hands-on activities and service projects. The Black College Institute is an academic summer enrichment program for more than 100 students designed to ensure that underrepresented and/or first-generation prospective students are aware of higher education opportunities at Virginia Tech. Potential opportunities for visuals include an up-close learning experience with the College of Science.  

When:  Wednesday, June 21, 2023 - 2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Where:  Hahn Hall North (900 W Campus Dr) and the Duck Pond

Who:  Interviews for the media will be available with:

·        Crasha Townsend, Assistant Provost for Diversity and Inclusion

·        Menah Pratt, Vice President, Strategic Affairs and Diversity

·        Select student participants 

Background: The Black College Institute is an academic summer enrichment program made possible through a partnership between the Office of Inclusion and Diversity and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. The program is designed to ensure that underrepresented and/or first-generation prospective students are aware of opportunities at Virginia Tech and welcome to pursue their interest in attending the university.  BCI has attributed to an increase in Black students entering Virginia Tech, from 3.8% in the Fall of 2016 to 8.9% in 2021.
