Virginia Tech's 23rd annual Graduate Education Week will feature events and activities, March 27-31
Virginia Tech’s 23rd annual Graduate Education Week on March 27-31 will recognize and celebrate the work of the university’s more than 7,000 graduate students with the theme "Unlock, Unleash, Ignite."
“It’s all about students unlocking their potential, unleashing knowledge and resources, and igniting their educational passions to prepare for life after graduate school,” said Graduate School Student Services Director Lauren Surface.
Virginia Tech, like many of its peer institutions, holds Graduate Education Week to highlight the importance of graduate education and increase awareness of the contributions of graduate students to teaching, research, and service. Virginia Tech is classified as an R1 research university, placing it among the most research intensive in the nation. Offering approximately 70 doctoral degrees, the university relies on graduate students to contribute to the research enterprise.
The Graduate School hosts several events and activities throughout the week on the Blacksburg campus and in the greater Washington, D.C., metro area. Among the highlights is the display of art and photography by graduate students that fills the halls of the Graduate Life Center on Otey St in Blacksburg.
Another annual event is the Graduate and Professional Student Senate’s research symposium, now in its 39th, that takes place on Wednesday, March 29. Graduate students from across the university’s colleges and programs will share their work in poster sessions and oral presentations. On Thursday, March 30, the Graduate School will hold a reception to honor award winners, including colleges’ top master’s and doctoral students and faculty mentors. On Friday, March 31, a panel of graduate alumni will discuss their experiences and insights gained while pursuing their degrees and in their life after graduation.
The week culminates Friday afternoon with the annual barbecue on the Graduate School lawn on the Blacksburg campus, with music sponsored by the Graduate and Professional Student Senate.
