The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine will host a special event called Black Family Health on Feb. 7 as part of its Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging Series and in honor of Black History Month. Physicians across a range of specialties will provide their expertise as it relates to Black family health and answer audience questions.

This community-focused event aims to highlight health equity and health outcomes for the Black family as a whole and also the key role that the Black physicians play in our community. 

Specialties and expert physicians include:

  • Endocrinology: Kimberly Clay
  • Family medicine: Oluyemisi Solomon
  • Hospital medicine: Calandra Quarles
  • Infectious diseases: Anthony Baffoe-Bonie
  • Obstetrics and gynecology: Brooke Watkins
  • Pediatrics: Olivia Asamoah
  • Psychiatry: Azziza Bankole
  • Surgery: Ayesha Kelly

“We believe strongly that everyone deserves access to high quality health care and be well informed about that care,” said Bankole, the chief diversity officer at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. “We hope that members of our community will join us for this event and bring their questions so we can help address the health disparities that exists among Black families and potential solutions that take into account actual lived experiences.”
