John Maher named Thomas M. Wells and Kathy Dargo Professor

John Maher, professor and head of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, has been named the Thomas M. Wells and Kathy Dargo Professor in Accounting and Information Systems by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors. 

The Thomas M. Wells and Kathy Dargo Professorship in Accounting and Information Systems was established in 2017 to support teaching and research excellence in the Pamplin College of Business.

A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1985, Maher is a distinguished scholar in accounting. His recent scholarship has examined the capital market implications of firms meeting or beating revenue and cash flow forecasts, the effects of real earnings management on credit markets, and the influence of earnings management on IPO pricing. His research has applied decision modeling to accounting and auditing, particularly in debt markets.

Maher has written more than 50 published papers, book chapters, and proceedings in his career. He has presented his research to audiences around the world and has been an active member of his academic profession with a long and active history of service on editorial boards and as a review for many of the top journals in his field.

Maher has served as department head of accounting and information systems since 2016. He is a three-time recipient of Pamplin College’s Business Teaching Excellence Award and was recognized as Pamplin’s Outstanding Faculty in Doctoral Education in 2009, having served on more than 25 dissertation committees.

Maher has worked as a public accountant in New Zealand and as an internal auditor and management accountant in Pennsylvania. He received his bachelor’s degree and M.B.A. from the University of Scranton and a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University.
