Gillian Eastwood named assistant professor of entomology
Eastwood received her doctorate in disease & conservation ecology from the Zoological Society London.
Gillian Eastwood, an assistant professor of entomology, is one of a number of new faculty members recently hired in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences this academic year.
New positions were identified to bring talent to the college's focus areas, including food, health, the environment, and community viability. The new faculty members are distributed across teaching, research, and Extension.
Eastwood’s area of expertise is the ecology of vector-borne disease, with a key focus on the transmission cycles of mosquito-borne viruses and the emergence of infectious zoonotic diseases. She is passionate about One Health and approaches that recognize the integration of human health with animal, wildlife, and environmental health. Her current research interests include the host and vector ecology of novel arbovirus lineages; the vectorial capacity of invasive mosquitoes; and, the influence of tropical forest degradation on species diversity and pathogen dynamics.
She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology and mathematics from the University of Birmingham; her master’s degree in environmental biology from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland; and her doctorate in disease and conservation ecology from the University of Leeds and Zoological Society London.
