Xiaowei Yue has been appointed assistant professor in the Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech. He is one of 28 new faculty members hired by the college for the 2018-19 academic year.

Yue's research focuses on real-time data or "big data" generated from complex systems that provide unprecedented opportunities for improving complex system operations. His objective is to develop novel methodologies for system-level fusion of data-driven models and physical models to effectively extract features from high-dimensional data. He seeks to achieve real-time monitoring, accurate detection, quick diagnosis, predictive control, and optimization of system operations.

“What excites me the most is that my research focuses on not only developing fundamental methodologies, but also solving the challenging real-world problems,” said Yue. “For example, our developed engineering-driven data analytics methodologies have been applied to various real-world applications, including nanomanufacturing and advanced aircraft assembly processes. The new technique can significantly reduce the assembly time and improve dimensional quality of aircraft.”

Yue received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Beijing Institute of Technology in China; his master's degree is statistics, and his doctoral degree in industrial engineering, both from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He was a 2018 recipient of the Mary G. and Joseph Natrella Scholarship from the American Statistical Association and the 2017 recipient of the Industrial and Systems Engineers Outstanding Graduate Award at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
