John M. Pinkerton honored with emeritus status
John M. Pinkerton, the SunTrust Professor of Finance in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of SunTrust Professor Emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The emeritus title may be conferred on retired professors, associate professors, and administrative officers who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive an emeritus certificate from the university.
A member of the university community since 1977, Pinkerton has focused his scholarship on issues of capital structure, market efficiency, and investment banking. He completed numerous market efficiency studies, the most important investigating insider trading around mergers. He was the author of approximately 40 published articles in academic and practitioner journals, including the Journal of Finance.
Pinkerton taught more than 20 undergraduate and graduate level courses. He advised many students on master's theses and doctoral dissertations and helped them develop successful careers in both industry and academe. He has won several awards for his teaching, including the Learning Resources Award and the Certificate of Teaching Excellence.
Pinkerton chaired the finance department’s undergraduate curriculum committee for several years and Pamplin’s research committee. He served as the director of his department’s Ph.D. program for five years.
A member of the American Finance Association, Financial Management Association, and the Southern Finance Association, Pinkerton received his bachelor’s degree and MBA from Virginia Tech and a Ph.D. from the University of Florida.
