Corps alumni Capt. Derrick Anderson and Capt. Jerry Andes II named Georgia Tech game Hokie Heroes
Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets alumnus Capt. Derrick Anderson, U.S. Army, who earned a degree in political science from the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences and a minor in leadership studies from the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Rice Center for Leader Development and Capt. Jerry Andes II, U.S. Army, who earned a degree in animal and poultry sciences from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and a minor in leadership studies from the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Rice Center for Leader Development were selected as the Hokie Heroes for the football game versus Georgia Tech
The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Hokie Hero program started in 2006 by IMG College, honors Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets alumni who are currently deployed. Recipients of this honor are highlighted by Jon Laaser and Mike Burnop during the radio broadcast of Virginia Tech football games, on the Corps of Cadets website and in the Corps Review magazine.
Anderson has served for over nine years as an infantry officer and a special forces operator. He is deployed for six months to the Middle East as a member of the Special Operations Command Forward Contingency Operation and is currently serving as a Special Forces Operational Detachment - Bravo Executive Officer assisting with the training of other coalition soldiers fighting the War on Terror.
Anderson is from Fredericksburg, Virginia, and a member of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Class of 2006. As a senior in the Corps he served as the First Battalion Commander and the Regimental Executive Officer. During his time at Virginia Tech he was a member of Tactical Applications Company, Sigma Chi Fraternity, and was Homecoming King.
Capt. Anderson says he sends his love to his family and friends and regards to all his buddies and the Hokie nation.
Andes is deployed for nine months to Camp As Sayliyah in Doha, Qatar, as a member of the Expeditionary Contracting Command.
He is serving as a contracting specialist in support of the Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan, United States Forces-Afghanistan and the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing in providing rapid resourcing solutions for U.S. and Afghan Forces. Andes and his team work every day to ensure that mission critical supplies and services are available as combat multipliers.
He is from Harrisonburg, Virginia, and is also a Class of 2006 graduate of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. As a senior Andes served as the Regimental S-3 Operations Officer. He says he sends his love to his wife Ashley, to all of his buddies, and to the Hokie Nation.
